ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE TEMECULA VALLEY INTERNATIONAL FILM & MUSIC FESTIVAL

Frequently Asked Questions

How many entries do you receive and how many are chosen?

All film and music entries go through a rigorous process by a Program Selection Committee. In addition, TVIFF considers input from the community through information obtained at the community sneak previews and music review sessions.

This year in the film category, we received approximately 600 entries and expect to screen 80 to 100 films. Film categories include: full length features, shorts, documentaries, animation, student and foreign films. We use the online submission capability via Without A Box, an international online exchange that provides filmmakers the tools they need to make film festival submission both easy and accessible. For the music component, we received online submissions via Sonicbids which streamlined the music entry process. Over 250 entries came in this year and only 10-15 music artists will be selected as the 2006 TVIFF Music Artists and will be featured in the MusicFest Showcase and included in 2006’s Compilation CD.

What’s the buzz about Opening Night?

The 2006 Opening Night is expected to be the best ever! We will usher in this year’s festivities with a screening of Terri Farley’s film, Beautiful Dreamer, which stars Brooke Langton, Colin Egglesfield, Barry Corbin, James Denton, Tom Everett and Susan Barnes. In addition, for the first time ever we will screen a short called West Bank Story, which is a comedy/musical about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

What do you mean by ‘festival partners’?

As part of the regional, national and international growth of our festival, we have developed partnerships with leading film organizations to showcase the best of independent contemporary films throughout the world. For 2006 we will be presenting approximately 5 showcases, two to 4 hours in length, of new work by filmmakers in countries including Canada, Italy and Australia. Showcases include: American Film Institute's Directing Workshop For Women; Australian Film, Television and Radio School; Toronto International Film Festival Group; Rome Independent Film Festival, USC School of Cinema-Television and the California Conservatory of the Arts.

What kind of economic impact does the Festival have on Temecula and the surrounding area?

The most obvious impact is the festival’s ability to attract worldwide media attention to Temecula during the festival. Last year attendance topped 10,000 and gave the local restaurants, shops, wineries, golf courses, casino and hotels in Temecula a boost in revenue. The festival spends no less than $75,000 in the community including vendors and local hires.

Where are they now? Going to the Oscars!!!

Our 2004 Opening Night Film, Maria Full of Grace, winner of the Sundance Film Festival, went on to see it’s leading actress, Catalina Sandino Moreno, nominated for Best Actress at the 2005 Academy Awards. Paul Mezey, the film’s producer sat on the 2005 TVIFF Film Jury and was present throughout the festival to chat with participants. In addition, Birthday Boy, a short foreign film entry from Australia, was nominated in the Best Animated Short Film in the 2005 Academy Awards and M-Pact, a 2004 TVIFF Featured music artist was invited by Trevor Rabin to submit their music portfolio for possible film soundtrack consideration.

Tell me about the Awards Gala Night?

This is the festival’s crown jewel event—a star studded black tie affair where Lifetime and Outstanding Career Achievement Awards are presented to film and music artists who have had significant success, body of work and over-all positive contributions. This year’s Awards Gala Night promises a Hollywood style show with musical numbers, production numbers and exciting visual presentations.

This is a hot ticket - a must-attend gala event with limited seating. The gala is open to the public, this glamour event gives the public a chance to hobnob with honorees and celebrity guests, which have included: Ray Charles, Martin Sheen, Natasha Hentsridge, Billy Preston, Etta James, William Shatner, Rita Coolidge, Louis Gossett, Jr., Isaac Hayes, Lou Rawls, Sean Astin, Adrian Paul, director Jonathan Lynn, film composer Trevor Rabin, Karl Malden, Carl Reiner, Michael York and many more..

For 2006, the festival is proud to honor music legend Dionne Warwick, veteran actor Hector Elizondo, prolific TV and film actor Dennis Haysbert, film composer John Ottman and Without a Box founder David Straus.

Growth Explosion – The Snowball Effect

When a festival reaches critical mass the snowball begins to roll downhill, picking up speed and bringing in all sorts of new and exciting opportunities. Most significant to note are: the level and caliber of content in every component of the festival since its inception in 1995, including: prestigious alliances, workshops, number and quality of film and music entries, honorees, media coverage, and community support.

The Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival has indeed come a long way in capturing the attention, participation and awareness of the ever changing/increasing demographic population of the Temecula Valley and surrounding areas with a projected attendance of 12,000 attendees at this year’s festival.

What is the role of the community in the festival? How does one get involved?

Our website (www.tviff.com) is the portal to everything festival! We have many community sponsors, old and new who provide logistical support and we utilize a small cadre of volunteers. TVIFF is ideal for volunteers who are fascinated with film, television and music and/or aspire to work in the industry. Volunteers will get an up close and personal opportunity to meet significant film and music industry talents from in font of and behind the cameras. Additional perks include free screening/workshop tickets, discounted special events tickets, event merchandise and miscellaneous opportunities to mingle with the honorees, such as with past honoree Isaac Hayes - one volunteer was lucky enough to drive him to an appointment which led to dinner afterwards.

How large was the event in its first year (12 years ago)? To what do you attribute its growth?

The first festival twelve years ago was pretty small – with only 25 films in two little theaters with a total of 600 people in attendance during the 5-fay inaugural event. . The growth can be attributed to hard work, the support of the city, community and connections within the industry. TVIFF is a custom tailored event – a 'Temecula Community' event complete with its own unique home grown touches like hot air balloon rides for participating filmmakers. Most film festivals are staged in world capitals and major cities, but TVIFF has done the community of Temecula proud and has come a long way for its inception. Aside from its international appeal, growing attendance and unique fusion of tributes and showcases of emerging styles of cinema and music, what makes TVIFF difference is its heart, substance and soul. It has remained true to its original mission: showcasing the creative talents of fresh, non-mainstream, unknown, up and coming, independent film and music artists.

What are some past Festival Highlights involving TVIFF Honorees?

Past honoree Dom DeLuise called the police reporting his car stolen from the Tower Plaza Parking lot. Meanwhile he had parked in the parking garage across from the theater and found his car just as the Temecula police were driving into the parking lot. Dom waived at the officers and said...'Thank you but don't worry, I found a car that looks exactly like mine!"

Billy Preston and Etta James' impromptu concerts!! Etta James surprised the Awards Gala audience with a 4-song performance including, 'AT LAST' and Billy Preston started with 'You are so Beautiful' and twenty minutes later, he had the crowd toe tapping and clapping and singing with him! Both were so touched by the honor and got so emotionally carried away to the delight of the Awards Gala attendees.

Last but certainly not least was Ray Charles appearance at the 2001 Festival--two days after 9/11. He had every reason to back out of attending but he took the last flight out Dallas, to make it in time for the Festival! A class act, all the way.

“From an initial effort in 1994 that attracted 600 attendees, to this year’s festival which should draw approximately 12,000 guests, TVIFF is a prime example of the axiom, ‘success breeds success,’” explains Jo Moulton, founder and Festival Director. “Programming has been about creativity, diversity and excellence. From a documentary about garage bands in Seattle, a short comedy about Israelis and Palestinians, a Disney animated short, an alternative rock band from Ireland or a folk singer from San Diego, the films and bands our guests will see and hear this September represent artistic excellence from as far away as Mongolia, Hungary, New Zealand and as nearby as Fallbrook and our very own Temecula.”

2006 TEMECULA VALLEY INTERNATIONAL FILM & MUSIC FESTIVAL SET TO ROLL SEPTEMBER 13-17

Temecula, Calif. (July 26, 2006) - The Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival (TVIFF) is proud to announce legendary music icon Dionne Warwick as the 2006 Lifetime Career Achievement Award recipient. Warwick will accept the award at a black tie gala on the festival’s closing night, Sunday, Sept.17, 2006 at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif. The lifetime career achievement award is presented to icons in the film and music world that have made significant contributions to the art and business of film and music.

Celebrating 45 years in show business in 2006, Warwick’s signature interpretations have made their mark on the landscape of pop music through each decade, weaving generations of listeners from every demographic. Her reputation as a hit maker has been firmly implanted into American consciousness, thanks to nearly sixty charted hit songs since “Don’t Make Me Over” climbed the charts in 1962.

Warwick received her first of six Grammy Awards in 1968 for her classic hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and in doing so, became the first African-American solo artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Performance. Dionne also preceded the success of some her musical peers by becoming the first such artist to achieve twelve consecutive Top 100 hit singles from 1963-1966, including “Walk on By,” “I Say A Little Prayer,” “Close To You,” “Anyone Who Had A Heart,” among many others.

Warwick is currently completing her first new album of duets for Concord Records, due out this Fall and featuring an array of top flights artists, including Gladys Knight, Olivia Newton John, Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston, Mya and Pink, among others.

Commenting on Warwick’s award, Founder and Festival Director, Jo Moulton said, “Warwick is the consummate artist and performer. Her music, her amazing body or work and accomplishments are truly worthy of recognition. Her songs have touched the hearts of millions for decades. Her attendance and participation in our festival is validation of her support and recognition of what our festival is all about--the promoting and showcasing of largely untapped, unrecognized but truly gifted independent film and music artists.”

Other honorees for the 2006 Gala in the categories of Producer, Actor, Actress and Director will be announced shortly. In years past, honorees have included such legendary talent as Ray Charles, Karl Malden, Rita Coolidge, Robert Wise, Carl Reiner, Etta James, Shirley Jones, John Spencer, Michael York, Louis Gossett, Jr. and Leonard Maltin.
